Armenia
The DecameronArmenia is not the setting for a narrated scene, but it is the homeland that makes a family’s recognition possible. In the story of Teodoro, the name identifies both the country from which Fineo’s son was taken as a child and the origin the condemned young man recalls when questioned; that shared connection turns an execution procession into a reunion.
Homeland and Absence
Fineo, one of three Armenian nobles sent as ambassadors to Rome to discuss matters concerning a forthcoming crusade, is present in the story far from his homeland. Fifteen years earlier, corsairs had carried off his young son from the coast of Lazistan, and Fineo had received no news of him since. Armenia therefore enters the narrative not through a description of its landscape or society, but through distance, loss, and the surviving memory of origin.
Recognition Through Language and Mark
As Teodoro is being led toward execution, Fineo sees a naturally imprinted red mark on his breast, described as resembling a rose. The mark prompts him to compare the young man’s apparent age with the age his missing son would have reached. He calls out the name Teodoro and questions him in Armenian; Teodoro answers that he was from Armenia, was Fineo’s son, and had been brought away as a little child by people he could not identify. The place-name, the language, and the bodily mark together make recognition possible where years of separation have erased ordinary knowledge of the child’s fate.
Consequence in the Plot
Fineo recognizes Teodoro as his lost son and embraces him before the officers escorting him can carry out the sentence. He asks the captain to delay the execution, asserting that the condemned man is free and his son, and that he is willing to marry Violante, the woman whose supposed loss of maidenhood had brought him to judgment. The captain has Teodoro taken back from the road to execution. Armenia’s narrative significance lies in this reversal: remembered origin and a shared language restore a family identity, and that recognition changes the outcome of a death sentence.
